About Mink Boutique
Our mission is simple. To provide unique clothing that looks great and is produced in a socially conscious way. Owner Carla Mink strongly believes in community, sustainability and reducing environmental impact. Cheap, throw-away clothing is filling up landfills at an alarming rate! Nope, not given another life, or resold, actually thrown in the garbage. The fashion industry is the second largest polluter behind oil. Working in the fashion industry her whole career, Carla couldn't work for retailers contributing to this global crisis anymore. It was time to strike out on her own.
Carla founded Mink in 2007. Carla began designing and producing her own clothing line in 2014, and that's the part of the business she's most passionate about. "I design every piece with the Carla Mink label. I start with a vision of what I want a garment to look like and then I work with a pattern maker to create the perfect silhouette," Carla says. "The hardest and most painstaking part of the process is the fitting of the garments. We sometimes spend hours on one single piece to make sure the garment fits just right. As a designer, I want to create something that a client will wear for years to come. I want her to love it and feel like she looks great the day she buys it, but also feel just as excited when she wears it for the hundredth time!"
The Carla Mink line has a very low carbon footprint. "We use eco-deadstock fabric which otherwise would be thrown away or burned, and work with a Portland based sew-house just up the street from our shop who stitches up the garments," Carla says. "The only real resources we use are thread, notions, paper for our patterns, electricity and gas driving back and forth to our sew-house. And that's all we're ever going to use!" Mink adds.
Mink has been a favorite of Portland shoppers for more than a decade. In addition to the Carla Mink line, the shop is full of dresses, tunics, jeans, tops and sweaters from designers who create classic pieces with a nod to current trends.
Carla Mink's line includes dresses and separates that are conceived, designed and produced in Portland. When you purchase a garment from Carla's line, you're supporting an entire chain of local artists and freelancers.
In our Hawthorne District boutique you'll find an artfully curated selection of well-made clothes from a range of responsible manufacturers. We choose to carry sustainable clothing from companies who are conscious of their carbon footprint and use production techniques that are kind to our planet.
