Behind the Design: The 3 Pieces I'm Proudest of
Posted on 31 October 2017
Hi Carla Mink here. I'm the designer at Mink. When I work in the shop customers love asking me questions about the clothing I design. That gave me the idea to start a blog series taking you behind the scenes.
It's pretty extraordinary that we design and produce all of our women's apparel pieces in Portland, Oregon. Since Portland is not an apparel hub like L.A. or NYC it takes a bit more effort, but I think it's totally worth it.
When you buy a piece from Carla Mink at Mink or shopmink.com you are supporting 14 women and one guy who all live in the Portland metro area. Every one of these 14 souls earns a living wage! So please take that into consideration when browsing our items.
Unlike fast-fashion would have you believe, making clothing while maintaining high standards (good working conditions, livable wages, quality fabrics and reasonable timelines), is actually quite expensive. We often refer to the clothing we make as slow fashion.
This fall season was our biggest season yet! We dropped a total of 15 new pieces along with our core line (the staple pieces we always have) in original fabrications.
I toiled with this line more than seasons past. I was really trying to push myself to the next level; I think it worked, but of course you are the ultimate judge. Here are the three pieces I'm most proud of:
The Brahmani Gauchos were my first real pant! Not only that, but they are woven (not stretchy), which is just plain hard to fit. We body scanned our fit model to make these just perfect. And they turned out EXACTLY how I wanted them to. They are ultra comfy without sacrificing a bit of style.
The Billy Funnel Neck is all the things I love in a dress. It's flattering, edgy and functional. The pockets are big enough for an iphone, the length is long enough to be appropriate for work, but sassy enough to wear out; and the funnel neck is edgy without trying too hard. We made it out of ponti, which is super-comfy, but thick enough to hide flaws.
The Rorey Jumpsuit has been hard to keep in stock! It's a jumpsuit designed for women who think they can't wear jumpsuits. No joke! We put pleats in all the right places, created a forgiving waistline and added a jogger bottom so the length can be worn long or short. We've sold them as fast as we've made them. Expect more stock soon! (email email@example.com and we'll put you on the waiting list).
I would love to hear what you think of the fall line. You can see our look book here, and look out for a holiday drop! Yes, the clothing line has new items coming sooooonnnn!
Hope you enjoy! XO,
